<< Now, I've heard that an excessively fast vibrato is caused by
lack of support & breath. Is this truth? >>

ernie,

as a long time member of this list i'm sure you can recall how many
problems have been blamed on 'a lack of support' from 'no vibrato' to famine
in third world countries and now 'fast vibrato'.

there was a time when i think it was quite fashionable for female
singers to have chirpy little voices. you have already mentioned bidu
sayao, i'd add lily pons (when i was a kid i thought her name meant lilly
pond in french) and affecting the early singing of roberta peters and patrice
munsel. you can hear sopranos in musical theater of the same era imitating
this chirping.

i think a lot of singing is the result of intention and that technique
only assists the purpose of the singer.
