You asked about cabaret because some male faculty members were a little, well, perhaps "phobic" - and associated this art form with homosexuality. Here is a site about cabaret that might help dispel some of that and make them more comfortable. http://www.cabaret.org/.
Cabaret is more intimate than some may be used to and maybe the intimacy between singer and audience is what makes these few uncomfortable. Tell them to think of it as stand-up for singers. A chance to be un-PC in song or get in a political dig in the key of Eb.
Regardless, it certainly is not limited to any sex or lifestyle or political party or anything.
