Hi, Listers.
i'll try to translate the review from a big Brazilian daily newspaper on Pavarotti's performance in San Salvador, Brazil:
Heavy rain, some coughing and little voice was what L.Pavarotti brought to an audience of 7,000 people in S.S. for his performance with Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia ( 2 popular Brazilian singers ) to celebrate Brazil's 500th anniversary.
... What was new was seeing the voice once considered one of the most beautiful in the world completely without timbre, coughing, shortening and escaping from high notes, snipping phrases and not integrated with the orchestra... Bethania's lower pitches ( she's a contralto ) were the best during that night.
The rain is over, Pavarotti is back. It all seemed to be leading to a happy ending. However, since the first chords of "Addio, Fiorito Sil', we could notice it wouldn't be like that. Pavarotti didn't even have to project his voice: microphones would help him, all he had to do was sing. But not even that could he do. The tenor 'was defeated' not only by the 6 opera arias, but also by the Italian songs.
In ' O Sole Mio', chaos was installed, on and off the stage. Pavarotti, Bethânia and Gal each sang at a different note, a different rhythm and different lyrics... The audience, supportive throughout the whole presentation, ended up being driven away by the falling rain that started over at that very moment. There could be no better ending for this authentic musical 'Titanic' than water. A lot of water.
Moral: if he can, why can't we? :-)
Bye,
Caio Rossi
