My own aesthetic/taste suggests a compromise: I don't like singing that sounds like speech, but I do want intelligibility, at least most of the time. I suggest what Miller reports as aggiustamento, where there is some modification of every vowel to keep a uniform degree of resonance, so it is not quite like the vowel one might use in speaking, but still sounds very much like it in performance.
