if a vowel is considered inherently short, it would not be possible to sing it 'long'. therefore, length is not a property of the vowel that can be both. short and long are usage considerations.
though, in the short run, it may be easier to use these terms for certain people, ultimately, they are better off knowing the actual, even if it takes them longer to get it.
on the other hand, i have recently adopted "expert use of whatever works" as a motto (having practiced it for years) so, if calling it 'long' and 'short' works for you, go right ahead. as i tell my fellow golfers, 'if you have to stand on your head to hit the ball straight, stand on your damn head!"
