I think this is exactly what I did yesterday without knowing I was doing it. I arrived at the Kennedy Centre for my audition about 45 minutes early, and with nothing much to do (except read a book), and instead managed to get myself all worked up and nervous in anticipation of having to wait to audition. The result was that by the time I actually went into the Opera House for the audition, all the adrenalin rush had dissipated, and I felt -as you said - energised and ready, but no longer nervous.
I think I'll have to make this a regular part of my "technique" as well - it really worked!
