I believe that you are grabbing muscles in your throat. The first thing to look at is your support system. Read Richard Miller on Appoggio.

When you have done lots of arpeggios with your appoggio in place, try doing octaves. Do them starting with the lower middle voice. Sing mezzo voce. Be very aware of any shifting of the larynx, and stop immediately if it raises.

Yes. And unless it is dealt with artistic singing is impossible. This should be worked out with a good teacher. The ideas that your teacher is trying on you are good, however, until you have conquered your appoggio nothing will work.
