The cotton should surround the can and the box should surround the cotton. The can should stick out of the box by 2 or three inches. Place end of the can over your mouth and sing away. The sound will go down the can to the bottom where it will meet with cotton which should absorb most of it. The vibrations in the can will still give the singer an approximate sound and feel of the tone as an audience would hear it. To change the feel, use more or less cotton and/or have the can pertrude more or less out of the box.
