Linda Rammage in her book Vocalizing with Ease, has a very good exercise for
discovering easy jaw movements. She suggests that you sit in a chair with
the back against a wall and let your head tilt back and rest against the
wall. Allow the jaw to open down and back as the face muscles relax. Using
your hand, gently close your mouth and then let gravity open it again. Once
you have the feeling of a loose floppy jaw, start some easy vocalizes like
slides and sighs. Another idea that I use is to rest one hand on the chin
(like Jack Benny) when singing. This will immediately let you know when the
jaw starts to jut.
