Subject:  met's 'billy budd' (to ernie)

ernie,

i did see the met's 'billy budd' in 1978. stilwell, morris and the
'late' richard cassilly were in the cast. stilwell was good but, i wish i
had heard thomas allen instead. james morris was so smoothly frightening.
this was before he started singing much wagner and was still calling himself
a bass. that same year, i heard him as the four villains in 'hoffman' and
his voice in both was effortless and sooo dark.
cassilly was wonderful as vere, better than pears.

btw, i love george london. he is actually one of my very favorite
singers. (so, i'm a little schizo- what can i say?) (who said that?!?)
