It was true about Brazil too, but it was more a 'lumpen proletariat', petit
bourgeois aspiration for higher class lifestyle than solid musical
background. In the 50's here educated middle class white Brazilians aspired
to be Americans while they grew up in an environment ( Modernism ) that
valued national popular culture, like samba. That's where 'bossa nova' came
from.
