You definitelly have to watch out for that, specially in male singer who tend to confuse brightness with nasality since the feeling is similar

If your velum is raised there is absolutely NO WAY you will have any sort of nasality so, if you understand that concept and "try to feel nasal" your voice will probably have the the brightness and squillo needed for the high notes. Sounds like your teacher is doing a good job then.
