it sounds like you are trying to reduce the sound in your decrescendo.
remember, piano has to reach the cheap seats too. piano means soft not
quiet. if you think of a decrescendo as a change in quality, rather than a
change in size, you may find that you are no longer going to strangle the
sound.

if you think of shutting the glottis to stop the sound, i think that
would be more effortful than opening it all the way (the folds have to be
touching or near touching in order to make a sound). and by the way, what
do you stop the breath with? the only way i can think of is closing the
glottis.
