karin,
the voice is more variable than most would make it seem. almost every musical instrument varies widely in timbre from low to high. in singing a 'fretless' glide from low to high and vice versa without increasing the effort or volume, a voice spans the whole gamut from chest to falsetto (girl voice or whatever you wish to call it) in both male and female voices. it is effortless. the imposed requirements of aesthetics and cultural expectations cause us to do differently. the further we move away from this simple glide, the more we require ourselves to do. the singers (male) i can think of who sing closest to this unadulterated glide are caetano veloso and laurence dale (veloso is one of my favorites). the furthest away i can think of is lou rawls who sounds as if he sings everything in chest voice (if i sounded like lou rawls, i'd feel like king s*** and i'd be drinking champagne too).
mike ps. good luck
