I sometimes find Miller's tone a little patronising, along the lines of "I researched this so I know more than you.", but I think that this is a common problem with academic writing. In my own field I have to red academic papers frequently, often written by personal acquaintances. Often the writing style is completely alien to the character of the author. I think that the generally accepted academic style of writing has a lot to answer for. Personally I disagree with quite a lot of Miller's writings, but that is after looking beyond the style of the writing. I am quite willing to accept that he is a charming person. If I lived in the US I would be glad to meet him and talk about singing. If we didn't disagree occasionally, there really wouldn't be anything to discuss anymore.
