I don't know if there is one, but I recommend you try the Metropolitan Opera's
web site -
if there's not a link, there should be someone you can e-mail for more
information. The
URL is: http://www.metopera.org

That's what I've heard. If you post your inquiry on Opera-L (and the first
question,
too), I'm confident you'll get authoritative answers, as there are lots of New
Yorkers on
the list, and some Met people even (for example, the company's archivist,
Robert Tuggle,
contributes regularly). Opera-L's archive web site, where you can subscribe or
search the
archives (I know this subject has been discuseed on the opera list in the past)
at:
http://listserv.cuny.edu/archives/opera-l.html

My understanding is it's any role - but I doubt very many get hired through
that role! I
know they have separate auditions for chorus.

The Washington Opera has chorus auditions each year. The ask that people who
audition be
trained in opera vocal technique, but anyone can sign up and sing. I know
plenty of
students who have auditioned to get the auditioning experience, even though
they had no
expectation of getting hired. In the past, it's been much easier for male
singers I know
to get contracts. It's hardest for the sopranos - I know many very good ones
who don't
get contracts. But the quality of the group has improved so much over the past
several
years, that I suspect it's very competitive in all voice categories now.

The Washington Opera has also advertised for dancers, supernumeraries, etc.
There was a
cool article in the Washington Post a couple of months ago about the four local
men who
"supered" in the recent Giulio Cesare (Handel). In this production, these guys
-
recruited from body-building ranks - appeared bare-chested, were on stage a
lot, and often
carried a litter around with the character Tolomeo on it.

Not bad....I'm about to watch a video of "The Red Violin"!
