| Dear Naomi and Vocalisters, to translate this in a way that makes sense, the context (the rest of the poem, in fact) is absolutely necessary. The 'dein Gehen' e.g. can mean your departure, but also your walking, or it could mean both. I.m.o. you cannot translate poetry without interpreting it, or at least give attention tot the several possible interpretations, hence the need for more text. Theoretically we would also need the music, because the most important interpretation is the one of the composer, which is in the notes, but I think we can leave that over to you, once you have a good translation. Folks, I'm having trouble translating a few lines of the piece I'm currently
working on. I've done the homework, but some of the words are either not in
the dictionary or don't make sense in context. Can you help please? I'd
appreciate it very much!
The poetry is by August Stramm, from the song cycle DU, by Milton Babbitt.
(Yeah, the music's pretty hard, too!)
Here are the lines I'm having trouble with (you'll notice, of course, I've
spelled out the umlauts):
"Den Raum umwirbt die Zeit"
"Dein Gehen laechelt in mich ueber und reisst das Herz"
"Das Nicken hakt und spannt"
"Nacht grant Glas die Zeiten stehn"
"Fluestern plaetschert Blueten gehren Duefte spritzen Schauer stuerzen Winde
schnellen prellen schwellen Tuecher reissen Fallen schrickt in tiefe Nacht."
