I very much agree with Lisa Olson's statement. Whether it's opera, jazz, country, etc, the mass "uneducated" audience always seems to be more deeply moved by someone who appears to be working hard to sing. People always love the singers who tighten up their faces as if they're being subjected to torture. I would guess that the audience sees such a performance as more dramatic or sensitive. They mistake "effortless" singing for lack of emotion, which must certainly frustrate those who sing in a less strained manner.
