Good for you Stephanie!

Sounds like you are learning a two important lessons right away:
breathing & singing without tensing up the throat.
The E (& F & G) will come easier the more you sing & who knows what is
yet to come.

If you are a mezzo, some find themselves vocalizing up to high C & D. If
you are a true alto, it likely won't be so high. Don't try to force
anything though, everything becomes easier with time & practice & as you
get older, you'll see where your top is. It's good that you are starting
to study seriously at a longer age. It is hard to break bad habits when
you start studying later, I should know.

Anyway, start off singing music that is in a comfortable range. Your
teacher will be a great help in this regard. Also, try to sing music that
you like. It isn't much fun singing stuff you don't like, especially if
you aren't preparing for a performance. On the other hand, when preparing
for a performance you often learn to like things that you started out
disliking. Such is life!
