I learned how to get the focus up into the nasal area just by accident. I
was doing an experiment - I had a problem with not opening my mouth enough
while singing - so I thought, "let's see what happens when I sing with my
mouth open just as big as I can possibly get it!" Well, when I did that,
the sound just shot right up into the front of my face and was buzzing like
crazy! It really freed up my voice from being so down in my throat. Now I
can do it all the time, without having to stretch my mouth way open.

You might give it a try!
