Okay, then you mean [j] is the symbol for "y". Putting [y] in brackets means
that it is the IPA symbol for the sound of the French letter "u" or the "u"
with the umlaut in German. This is where the confusion arises. If you are
referring to the phonetic sound, use brackets. If you are referring to the
letter as it is spelled, then use quotes. Otherwise there will be total
confusion!!
