I hope you guys are listening to the Lyric Opera of Chicago broadcast of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde this afternoon. Jane Eaglen and Ben Heppner are in top form, and Michelle DeYoung and Alan Held, though lesser known, are singing at the same high level. I have always had some reservations about Eaglen's singing, but today she has simply outdone herself and stepped into that pantheon normally reserved for the post-war Wagnerians. I never thought I would hear Wagnerian singing of this quality in my lifetime, and I can hardly contain myself today. Wow!
