Having started musical life as a flutist who spent hours at the piano for fun (life in a tiny town with nothing to do & no tv allowed!), I might suggest, in my case at least, the old adage of "practice, practice, practice" certainly helps! Don't know when the process of hearing what I was seeing took place. Even playing hymns from an old hymnal can teach you how to read 4-part harmonies. Theory classes and ear training in college certainly added. Everyone is different and moves at their own pace. I would humbly suggest that you just start. If you find you're spinning wheels instead of learning, then conclude this is not for you and continue without it. When I have singing students who also want to work on their piano skills I use their current voice music as much as possible, so they can use and practice both things at once. You might want to do the same thing.
