Gosh, I love this question. My answer is "everything". Some songs might be
considered
"easy" in that there aren't a lot of notes and rhythms that are hard to learn,
or there
aren't too many foreign words to memorize, or the song doesn't challenge the
singer
technically (very high notes, very low notes, wide intervals, lots of fast-note
passaages,
etc.).

But to me, when the notes and the rhythms and all technical difficulties are
mastered,
that's where the REAL challenge begins - that of making the music "happen".
That's what
the art of singing is all about - phrasing, articulations, text interpretation,
etc.,
etc. That's why a "simple" song like "Caro mio ben" sounds like a different
piece
entirely when sung by an artist like Cecilia Bartoli. Listen to her CD "If you
love me",
where she performs many of the familiar "24 Italian Songs", and you can hear
how even the
"simplest" songs are a big artistic challenge.
