Dear Leslie,
A teacher who would be willing to diagnose fach based on appearance? As stated in the previous message, I do believe it is possible to draw correlations on a broad scale. That said, I think this teacher can be accused of pedagogical malpractice!
Anyone who knows my history knows I was mis-diagnosed as a bass early on, due to a well-developed strohbass (more on this subject later ;) so I am emotionally triggered by displays of purported omniscience by teachers - especially ones that haven't even heard a student yet!
As stated in an earlier message, I think there are strong correlations (although not without exceptions) between height and chest voice range. I don't believe the correlations are quite as strong between height and head voice range. It would be therefore easy to imagine a very tall light soprano or countertenor.
