Dear Alain,
The phenomenon had been known for a while - I've seen some stories about
harem eunuchs and their "sweete" singing voices. They were emasculated
for a different reason, of course. Who got the idea to do it to maintain
the Roman Catholic church's soprano ranks, I don't know...
