my husband had this surgery (laparoscopic) about 4 years ago and he is completely pleased with the results. he's had no symptoms since the surgery. he isn't a singer, so i can't answer that question. however, i can tell you his experience. he had some pretty strong pain for the first week or so and relied on his pain meds (liquid form) for the first couple of weeks. it took a good 2 months before he was completely recovered--having his energy back, no pain. the best advice i can pass along is, if you choose to have this surgery, follow the doctor's orders on what and when to eat to a "t". my husband made the mistake in not doing this and had a very scary experience, painful one, too, trying to swallow a piece of bread about 2 weeks after the surgery. he was getting his appetite back and wanted more than pureed food and soups. he was finally able to get it down through a lot of strain and effort. he was able to eat whatever he wanted after about 4-6 weeks. i remember i had a piano performance around 6 weeks after his surgery and he was still experiencing some discomfort in moving around and sitting. he had to leave his seat in the theatre now and then as sitting for too long was uncomfortable. so it is pretty major surgery. (he had the half-wrap). he had his surgery very early in the morning, spent the night in the hospital and came home the next afternoon.
he had 5 incisions, under 1", and most have faded almost completely. he isn't able to eat as he once did in terms of quantity of food and he experiences more gas (flatulance), both of which are common results. you get used to the flatulance part. : ) (although my mom's husband had the same operation and he doesn't experience excess gas.) there is also a chance that he may have to have this done again in another 20-25 years--a small number of people have to have it repeated again later in life. (my husband was 38 when he had the operation).
good luck. vicki
