Subject:  Covered tone

Dear Vocalisters:

The discussion of covering the tone always also brings up the matter
of vowel purity. Actually if one listens carefully to a singer as
he/she covers the tone one hears a modification of the vowel sound
towards the back vowels (/o/, /u/, and variations). In other words,
covering the tone is simply vowel modification.

But modifying the vowels is not not necessarily a trial and error
procedure. Vowels which are best for particular pitches and for
particular voices have been well defined and, if used, will provide
the desired "cover" without the trial and error "shot in the dark"
approach used by most singers and teachers who teach the cover
concept.
