Dear Lloyd and Listers,
With ;my students I make fairly frequent use of Vennard's "yawn-sigh' concept because I think it helps internalize in the student's mind and body a basic self-awareness for what a freely functioning vocal mechanism is all about. It is wonderful for developing sense of genuine vocal freedom, in my view. In the 1967 edition of his book--"Revised Edition, Greatly Enlarged"--of his book Vennard makes quite clear also that a "swallowed tone" is highly undesirable (see pp. 155-158.)
