Reg: It has been said that motivation for anything in life comes from FEAR or SELFISHNESS. ********************* While I agree that fear and selfishness are motives, I suspect there are many others too. ********************* Reg: I apologies for the use of the word "otherishness" but it is interesting that there does not appear to be a flippant word for the opposite of selfishness. ;) ********************* Selflessness; altruism, graciousness, generosity are just some antonyms for selfishness. In my opinion, there are many ways to deal with one's self that don't all have the negative connotation of selfishness. I see an entire range of choices from pathological self- serving through selfless service.
When it comes down to it, yeah, sure, even Mother Teresa's altruism was essentially selfishness in the sense that she was doing it because it gave her satisfaction. But isn't that selfishness essentially different than the kind that motivates say a sociopath? I think so. Self-absorbed Self-serving Self-preserved Self-interested Self-expressing Self-giving Self-sacrificing Just because a word starts with "self" doesn't automatically mean it's bad. Regards, Les
