Subject:  Re: Amateur opera companies in major cities

I'm not sure how we're defining "amateur" here. There are several
small companies in Boston, some of which persevere over many many
seasons, and some of which fold after only one or two productions.
Of these, some pay pretty well, while others pay transportation,
provided you walk to rehearsals & gigs! What is frustrating for me
is that some of these companies are started by enterprising sopranos
who want to make their own opportunities -- hence, the soprano roles
are not available! (I know, I know, I could start my own if I
wanted...) One other thing that is gradually improving (with thanks
due to Lynn Shane, of Boston Singers Resosurce) is the distribution
of information about auditions, etc. It's nice to live in a place
where there is so much musical initiative. Boston really has an
embarrassment of riches; you can choose from among several really
interesting concerts and plays just about every weekend.
