Dear Ingo et al, That's quite a good question. It's different in large urban areas than other places here. It is also apt to be a little different on a state-by-state basis. Atlanta, Georgia for example, is a large urban area with a professional opera company and other semi-professional to amateur groups that perform opera and light opera. Virtually every college and university that has a decent voice program will have an opera workshop that does one or two productions per year. Smaller city-states :-) have fewer choices, depending primarily on size and local culture.
The city in which I live, Savannah, has touring opera companies visit fairly regularly, but no dedicated company of its own. Last year, we had visits from Russian, English (from London) and two American opera companies. Our population in Savannah is a mere 250,000 or so, yet we have a fairly rich culture with two universities and the Savannah College of Art and Design (aka SCAD) at hand. SCAD is generally acknowledged to be the best art school in the country by the way. We have a thriving theatre community comprised of several companies that do Musical Theatre and occasionally some G&S.
La Boheme is currently running on Broadway. Regards, Les
