Devil's advocate here ;-)

Maybe not userful for your standard opera, but Peter Maxwell Davies
makes great use of an "extended" voice in 8 Songs for a Mad King. If
I remember correctly, the range is from A1 to D6. Of course, the
whole point is to show off how crazy the King has become, but it is a
useful artistic use of a large range nonetheless.

As a new music specialist, I have been called upon to produce (notice
I don't say sing!) pitches from E1 (lowest E on the piano) to B6
(above Queen of the Night F) for various "artistic" <g> reasons in
public.
