Dear Sharon, et al, Michael's example (in the other thread) of the guy who can sing from F2 to Bb4 pretty much describes my total range, the reliable portion (tessitura) of which is G2 to A4. I have had to work hard at it to develop my voice that much. Nevertheless, I'm grateful. With that modest talent, I have performed professionally both as a Bass and as a Baritone soloist and even once, sang a Tenor role (Archie) in "The Secret Garden". Archie was a bit of a stretch but to my surprise and delight, basically only required that I "lighten up" a little.
There are other considerations when it comes to range. There is dynamic range, range of color or timbre and range of flexibility, which all amount to range of expression. All of these "ranges" should be thought of as tools used for the basic purpose of allowing the performer to "tell the story".
The truth is, it doesn't matter if you have 10 octaves if you don't know how to use 'em.:-) Regards, Les
