Ah, this explains the difference. I was changing at the A, rather than the
C. That would have made it 6, (although still not 7) octaves.

Some of my original point (and thank you Les for questioning this in a much
calmer way than I) I feel is being highlighted by this very discussion.
Everyone is concerned about whether this range is accurate or not, but
no-one has really mentioned anything about the quality of Mariah Carey's
singing. The complete marketing around her seems to revolve around this
mythical 7 octave range, and not her abilities as a singer, writer,
communicator, performer.
