The "baritenor" (aka "tenor-baritone") and "baryton martin" (a French-specific fach) are not mythical. There are even roles written for the latter, including Debussy's Pelleas, L'annonciateur and L'amant in Germaine Tailleferre's LE MAITRE, Le chanteur des serenades in Sauguet's LES CAPRICES DE MARIANNE, Le Grand Pingouin in Ganne's LES SALTIMBANQUES, Ange Pitou in Lecoq's LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT, the title role in Fevrier's MAROUF.
French roles that aren't specifically designated "baryton martin", but which are "tenor or baritone" roles include Le Dancaire in Bizet's CARMEN, Paquillo and Second Notary in Offenbach's LE PERICHOLE, Wilhelm in his LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, Le Capitaine Francais in Bruneau's L'ATTACQUE DU MOULIN.
In the category of "baritenor" falls such roles as Eisenstein in Strauss's DIE FLEDERMAUS, Danilo in Lehar's DIE LUSTIGE WITWE, Ballad Singer and Macheath in Weill's DER DREIGROSCHENOPER, Mangus in Tippett's THE KNOT GARDEN (Tippett designated the role as being for "high tenor baritone"), Orestes in Gluck's IPHIGENIE EN TAURIDE (cast by Gluck himself with a high baritone in the Paris premiere, and with a tenor in the Vienna premiere), Red Shadow in Romberg's THE DESERT SONG, Cyril in Gilbert & Sullivan's PRINCESS IDA, Bunthorne in their PATIENCE, Macheath in the Pepusch/Gay BEGGAR'S OPERA, Orfeo in Monteverdi's L'ORFEO, Roland Lacy in Argento's THE SHOEMAKER'S HOLIDAY, Counsel for the Plaintiff in G&S's TRIAL BY JURY, Orin Mannon in Marvin David Levy's MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA, Antenore in Rossini's ZELMIRA, Gernando in his ARMIDA.
(Noteworthy: the role of the Drum Major in Berg's Wozzeck, while written for Heldentenor, was sung at the opera's premiere at the Met by baritone Nelson Eddy.)
There are also some roles that are written for "high baritone", but which aren't necessarily "zwischenfach". These include:
Dr. Falke in DIE FLEDERMAUS Valentin in Gounod's FAUST Eros in Barber's ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA Journalist in Berg's LULU Dr. Stone in Menotti's HELP, HELP, THE GLOBOLINKS! Harry Easter in Weill's STREET SCENE Lodger in Phyllis Tate's THE LODGER Nathan in Maw's SOPHIE'S CHOICE Seid in Verdi's IL CORSARO Strephon in Gilbert & Sullivan's IOLANTHE Conte di Luna in Verdi's IL TROVATORE The King in Susa's TRANSFORMATIONS Andy Warhol in Michael Daugherty's JACKIE O Edouard in Humphrey Searle's THE PHOTO OF THE COLONEL Lord Ruthven in Marschner's DER VAMPYR Second Apprentice in Berg's WOZZECK Wat Tyler in Alan Bush's WAT TYLER Faninal in Strauss's DER ROSENKAVALIER Athanael in Massenet's THAIS Sancho in Boismortier's DON QUICHOTTE Frank Lloyd Wright in Daron Hagen's SHINING BROW
