For me at least, messa di voce is the most important exercise and set examination test of the whole lot. In my book it is described as an 18th century part of the bel canto technique by which the vocalist crescendos and decrescendos on a sustained note. The inability to perform this smoothly on call indicates a defective technique. Reg Boyle. (Australia.)
