Dear Randy and Vocalisters:
"Play" voice is the voice children use when playing actively in outdoor locations (hopefully). Sometimes is is called "playground" voice. It is competitive and often purposefully harsh.
This discussion was prompted by a question about children K through 3 singing in the classroom. This is not class voice and is primarily concerned with teaching children how to carry a tune and the opportunity to learn new songs. At one time it was considered the obligation of the schools to further our Western civilization culture by teaching the folk songs of that culture. That is, evidently, no longer a concern of public education. Even so called education programs for young children on TV no longer use folk songs from Europe and the Americas as background material. It appears that newly composed material is now the primary concern. -- Lloyd W. Hanson
