I played his Serenade CD for my students a few weeks ago and asked, "So ... how would you describe this voice?"
My youngest student - age 10! - said, "That's a man!" Everyone else, just about, was surprised when I whipped out the CD box and said, in my best Austin Powers voice, "It's a MAN, baby!"

I entirely agree. David Daniels has one of the most beautiful voices of any voice type, and adds to that superb technique and artistry! I've been fortunate to hear him both in staged opera (Coronation of Poppea at Florida Grand Opera) and recital (Vocal Arts Series at the 500-seat French Embassy auditorium in Washington, DC). When I heard him in Poppea, I was amazed that in the closing duet, the size, color and projection of his voice were comparable to the first-rate opera soprano sound of his Poppea, Mary Mills.

Don't tell your pastor, but it so happens that David Daniels is of that persuasion (he's "out" - his partner lives in the DC metro area). But I can tell you that he's a good enough actor that he and Mary Mills heated up the house big-time during the Nero/Poppea scenes in Florida. (I suspect the pastor would not have approved of the performance in that instance, no matter what the singers' off-stage persuasions!)
