I'm not sure why a legato sound should lack vibrato. To me, vibrato is the
natural consequence of the vocal folds vibrating freely when the air passes thru
in a steady manner. A str8 tone tends to sound rigid and restrained to me --
and there are str8 tones and str8 tones. In the best str8 tone, there is warmth
and an undercurrent of vibration present. In the worst, the sound is flat and
boring.

My voice has never had any vibrato qualities until I begin pushing it further
than I really should. I truthful prefer the legato (pardon spelling) sound. I
guess that my question is Is vibrato something that all classically trained
singers should strive for or is it just personal preference?
