The chemicals ("glycols"--including butylene glycol, propylene glycol,
polyethlene glycol, and triethylene glycol) used in fog machines can, indeed,
cause allergic reactions. Good ol' dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide gas) is
often preferred because it rarely causes such problems--as long as the
theatre is well ventilated.
