On the spirituals in the voice studio survey, a respondent wrote: "How do you belt? How do you learn how if you are classically trained? I almost always strain when I try to belt and sometimes it hurts."
I must admit I was dismayed that someone thinks you have to belt to sing spiritual art songs. These art songs have the same vocal technical requirements that other art songs have. Yes, they need to be presented with emotion, but I would never "belt" them.
I use my classical vocal training to allow me to deliver them using my diaphragm. My power comes from there, and from the rest of my body, but never from straining my voice.
Of course, this was something I've had to learn myself over the years.
