I'm just jumping into this thread, so this may have been mentioned already.
If her chest voice is solid and then it becomes dark or muffled, do some multi-octave exercises on a very bright sound such as, a (apple), or na, na, na. This may cause a little nasality or laryngeal elevation at first, but at least will let her experience a more balanced sound, until she can move on to a more open vowel that allows her to get her larynx stabilized.
Even having her do voice imitations like a nasty witch, betty boop, etc., might initially break her out of the vocal identity she is married to at the moment.
