After reading several positive posts about Sissel, I picked up one of her CDs the other night. Sissel has a sweet sound with a slightly disconnected head voice (at times, other times it's connected) and absolutely no style. She has to be one of the blandest, straightest pop singers I have ever heard. She makes Debby Boone sound like Aretha Franklin.
I also went back and checked some files I've downloaded from Kazaa (because her name rung a bell) and discovered a duet she did with Brian May ("What are We Made Of?"). Brian May is the guitarist from Queen, and an OK singer in a Paul McCartney way. He blows her out of the water in this duet, which does not say much for Sissel. Mr. May is not an overly emotional singer or one prone to trickery. However his understanding of phrasing is much more sophisticated and hints at emotion much more than Sissel who comes off as musically square, proper and boring.
Sissel sounds like she'd appeal to a PBS crowd. It's pleasant, bland and inoffensive ... kind of like a grilled cheese sandwich.
