If you use Netscape's web browser, then it is quite easy to disable all graphics from being displayed. Disabling Javascript support should also stop popups.
So, If Netscape is not your main web browser, perhaps you could install Netscape and use it for browsing the Yahoo Group, then use your usual browser for genereal web surfing.
Netscape 7: to turn off images: Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Images -> select "Do not load any images"
to turn off javascript: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plugins -> de-select "Enable JavaScript for Navigator"
In Internet Explorer you can turn off pictures by; Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> de-select "show pictures"
