Summertime is in fact in b minor, and the range goes up to high b, almost 2
octaves above middle c. At no time does it go to chest register. The lowest note
is f# above middle c.

I think you're right about that.

If that's correct, then maybe Gershwin wouldn't be rolling in his
grave quite as mcuh as I would have thought. In B minor, if a woman
were to sing Summertime from F# below middle C to F# above and I
think it might sound very soulful, certainly more so than it would an
octave higher.

I don't know whether she has changed her range, but she sure sang
high on every song and she was very soprano-y (i.e., head voice) in a
way that I found ridiculous.
