i agree, most people have an expectation of hearing a live performance duplicate that which they have heard on a recording. one of the biggest problems in teaching pop singers is that their concept of 'right' means duplicating the recording of whatever song they are singing. of course, the closer they get to matching it, the less point there is in them doing it.
the example of jimi hendrix's version of 'all along the watchtower' is enough to shake most of them off the idea of copying the cd.
