That almost makes it sound like he reluctantly gave up singing
when his voice went "bad".... Voices changed later in those
days, 17 or so, from what I've heard, so I'm pretty sure he had
to be playing instrumental music from a much earlier age,
wouldn't you say? Perhaps it simply means that he stayed with
the Mettenchor as an instrumentalist. It seems to me that a
choir can usually use an extra bass.... but maybe not in a
situation where the high voices keep turning into them. :)

As long as we're on this subject, I've long had the impression
that Bach didn't especially like the Bass voice, and often wrote
what I consider his least attractive arias for Bass - this is
purely subjective - the ones I really love are usually in some
other range. Does anyone else have this impression?
