Dear Jodie and List:
A few quick comments:
a) These questions come up over and over because different people come and go...
b) It is fundamentally difficult to just write about singing, rather than to hear (and also) see what we are talking about.
I would further add that I do not believe any one pedagogy is "right" for everybody, and I do not believe that anyone has a monopoly on knowing how to teach proper singing.
With that said, I must say I have been enjoying very much watching the videos of masterclasses at the Dave Stroud web-site. These are really great to watch because:
a) Dave directly addresses how to transition from say chest to "mix"
b) Dave works with less than expert students in the masterclass audience.
c) Instead of us just writing about the subject, we can listen and watch demonstrations and less than perfect students struggle to deal with register transitions.
d) For those who are interested in the falsetto/head-voice issue, here is a chance to listen to one teacher's demonstration and explanation of the subject.
Again - I have no affiliation with Dave or the SLS organization - I stumbled across these and have found them quite interesting. Just go to:
http://www.davestroud.com/edu.instruct.index.frames.html
then click on "To view more educational videos, click here"
Then you are taken to the first of three pages containing videos - click on the arrow to go to the second page. There are several videos of interest on page 2 and page 3.
Cheers,
Michael
