Subject:  Remedial Work in grad school

Let's visit the grad school thing again - come on, I
know you can't wait!

As I am still trying to decide where I will audition,
a friend hs forced me to rethink my choice of degrees.
My original thinking was to go for a MM in
performance (I have an MA in ped) for these reasons:

1. My program was small and offered little graduate
level music history or theory, which would leave me
with at least 12 hours of remedial work to do before I
even start on doctoral level stuff, plus the
possibility of some additional hours depending on the
requirements of the program I enter.
2. Although I am academically strong and my teaching
skills are excellent, I lack the level of performance
polish that I believe would be required of someone
entering such a program. i. e. I would probably not
be the strongest student in the program and would not
be able to choose the best of the best.

My thinking was that the MM would give me the
opportunity to get the courses I missed, while also
allowing me to focus on my performance skills so that
I could enter a superior program for my DMA, all the
while giving me additional teaching experience via an
assistantship. I am 28, so I do have a little time -
if I do not have a DMA by the time I am 35, my world
will not crumble, however, obviously my teaching
opportunities will expand once I do have it.

Advice? I do not want to let my insecurity keep me
from the best opportunity, however, I do want to be
realistic and not set myself up for failure. I am
having a hard time sorting these options through.
